Warm days @ 4000'

Well the weather here has been warm as well. We have been 100 degrees the last few days, but remember that 90 is comfortable here because of the low humidity. But the extra 10 degrees is fairly noticable. So, what do you do when it is hot at 4000'? Go to 10000'! That is what we will be doing in the AM. We are taking another trip, and this one will be to Ireland Lake. I don't know if you can even Google this one, because it is very small and very remote. This trip will start at 8500' and the lake is at 10700' and about 11 miles in and 11 miles back. So that is the plan for Tuesday and Wed.

As for our CCC (California Conservation Corp.) hiker that was lost. Well he was found at about 18:30 hrs. that night by one of the helio crews. Unfortunately they found him on a ledge about 1600' below the crest of the cliff. So it was not a happy ending. Since it was a fellow park worker that was lost, the search became very large, very quickly. They ended up with 3 helios and several crews coming from outside the park. It was very interesting to see a military gunship flying above Half Dome.

We have talked to several people that are hiking the entire Pacific Crest Trail, which goes from Mexico to Canada, and it covers the entire John Muir Trail. And they all have said that the JMT is by far their favorite part of the hike. And they have given us updates on snow levels and river crossings to this point. It sounds like we should be in good shape by the time that we start it in August. Also we have seen many people that are starting the JMT here in the valley now, and we tell them that we will see them on the trail in a few weeks.

Talk to you soon.

Now that someone has actually sent me your blog site (I think someone, ahem RJ, promised not to forget me) I am happy to post a comment as requested in the previous post. Just caught up on the adventures, sounds like heaven on earth!! Hope they found the lost maintenance worker. I will be sure to show Jim the blog when he gets home this weekend. That is after I explain to him what a "blog" is. Sounds like you are having a blast. Keep it on and be safe you two. We will keep in touch.

Oh, and kudo's on finally getting the pictures posted. They are breathtaking. Well, since I am not retired I need to get back to work. Chow!

Hi There!

Finally got to see your blog after gramma gave me the link...
Anyhow, it is fun to read your comments...i love your titles for each entry...keep them creative!

You had mentioned that some hikers gave you an update on the snow spots and river crossings...will you be running into snow and if so what does that mean the temps are in those areas...just curious...you know me lots of questions. :}

Have Fun!!

There is allot of snow pack in the high coutry still. On the north side of peaks about 10,000'. This past winter there was 200% of normal snow fall in the Sierras. If there was a huge amount of snow left, like if we did the hike in June, we would need Ice Axes and Crampons (like spikey things that go on your shoes). But we will likely have to walk across some snow fields when we go. But they will have been traveled on many times before us, so we will have a good path to follow.

On average, the temps. drop about 5 degrees for every 1000' of evelvation. So right now it is in the 90's in the valley @ 4000' and at Tuolome Meadows @ 8000' it is in the 70's.

Talk to you soon.
